I connected with the model shown in the video and on the Accountability and Empowerment slide. It clearly demonstrates that good governance is a two-way street. It highlights that those doing the business need to be empowered to make decisions but they must also remain accountable up through the organization.

I think this stood our for me because of the link to my own organization. Our org chart has the Owner-Members at the top followed by their elected Owner Representatives followed by the Board then the CEO and finally staff. We believe that our staff and management are held to a higher level of accountability because of our governance structure.

It’s nice to flip the org chart in this way, Janet, to really reinforce how the co-op works. We become so accustomed to reading from top to bottom that sometimes the arrows pointing up in a bottom-up org chart don’t fully register!

“I thoroughly enjoyed the Good Governance Matters course offered by Co-operatives First. The course provided a solid background on governance generally and specific examples of good governance practices in co-operatives. It is uncommon to find governance training specific to co-operatives so this was refreshing.”

“This course was highly enjoyable, and relevant to working in not only the co-op space, but with any group that needs to make decisions.”
