Thanks for this Mary – you point to a very important problem which is something called “institutional isomorphism” — when two organizations become similar to each other — in this case, co-ops mimicking investor-owned firms, perhaps because of the belief that the structure of investor-owned firms is beneficial. We’re going to look at this a bit more later on in the course. But it’s interesting to think about now, in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis and resulting economic crisis. We are seeing many of the weaknesses of the current system, dominated by investor owned firms. Many people are now looking at the relative resiliency and pro-social aims of the co-operative model as a solution to the failures of small and medium-sized businesses now. It will be very interesting to see how this conversation evolves in coming weeks/months.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the Good Governance Matters course offered by Co-operatives First. The course provided a solid background on governance generally and specific examples of good governance practices in co-operatives. It is uncommon to find governance training specific to co-operatives so this was refreshing.”

“The online course, Good Governance Matters was very informative, easy to navigate and discussed issues relevant to our needs as a Board of Directors. This course is a great tool for boards to build their knowledge to become strong, strategic boards.”
